Here's The Story Behind That Emotional 'Sierra Burgess' Theme Song

While there have been mixed reviews about Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, starring Shannon Purser, Noah Centineo, Kristine Froseth, and RJ Cyler, I think we can all agree that the song "Sunflower" is one of the most precious tracks we've listened to lately. We love it even more because Shannon actually sings the song for the camerano lip-syncing or ghost singers here!

She posted a photo of an actual sunflower a few weeks before the film's release.

The song plays an important role in the movie because it's ~written~ and sung by Sierra (Shannon) after things inevitably fall apart when she pretends to be beautiful head cheerleader Veronica (Kristine) while talking to a quarterback named Jamey (Noah). Her best friend Dan (CJ) tries to stop her, but does she listen? Nooooo.

According to an article from Billboard, the song is based on lyrics that the film's screenwriter, Lindsey Beer, wrote in her teens. Did you know that "Sunflower" was actually supposed to be a poem? In the first drafts of the script, it's the written project that Sierra turns in for class.

When they filmed Sierra's performance (the one where she sings "Sunflower" for her dad), almost everyone on set got emotional! According to Lindsey, "the entire crew was in tears, men and women included. There were definitely some ugly crying faces."
