Here at Cosmo, we have a weakness for the handsome and mysterious K-drama male lead. Son Suk Ku fits the bill nicely with his recent turn as Mr. Gu in the Netflix drama My Liberation Notes (more on that later!). But this isn't the first time we've encountered this charming actor. It was love at first sight when we watched him alongside Bae Doona in the award-winning American series Sense8 back in 2017. Suk Ku has been gracing dramas and films through the years, showing off his versatility as he goes from suspense to romance to action, all without breaking a sweat. If, like us, you need more Son Suk Ku in your life, read on for a selection of his dramas:

Early projects

  1. Mother (2018)
Who else is in it: Lee Bo Young, Heo Yool, Lee Hye Young, Nam Gi Ae, Ko Sung Hee

In this suspense drama, teacher Kang Soo Jin (Bo Young) makes the decision to whisk away Hye Na (Yool), one of her students, when she realizes the little girl is suffering at home. Can they escape the clutches of Shin Ja Young (Sung Hee), Hye Na's abusive mother? Get prepared to hate Suk Ku here as he plays Lee Seol Ak, Ja Young's similarly abusive boyfriend whose violent tendencies hide even more sinister intentions.

  2. Suits (2018)
Who else is in it: Jang Dong Gun, Park Hyung Sik

In this Korean adaptation of the popular US series Suits, genius Go Yeon Woo (Hyung Sik) has the smarts to become a successful lawyer. Only he's not actually one. Prominent lawyer Choi Kang Seok (Dong Gun) of Kang & Ham law firm takes him in despite his lack of credentials, challenging him to prove his worth. Suk Ku plays David Kim, a smooth-talking freelance lawyer who used to work for a firm in New York. He holds a grudge against Kang Seok from their days at Harvard, and he does his best to get in Kang Seok's way as they find themselves on opposite sides of the court. This one is a must-watch. We love it when Suk Ku plays confident characters. Plus, he looks dashing in a suit. Need we say more?

  3. Matrimonial Chaos (2018)
Who else is in it: Cha Tae Hyun, Bae Doona, Lee El

Suk Ku's name started gaining more traction in South Korea after starring in this star-studded rom-com. He plays Lee Jang Hyun, the quintessential ladies' man. Despite being married to Yoo Young (El), he entertains other women, causing their relationship to get strained. The drama also features another couple, bubbly Hwi Roo (Doona) and stubborn Seok Moo, whose contrasting personalities end up destroying their marriage. Yoo Young is also Seok Moo's first love, which complicates their situation further. Will these two couples survive in the end?

In it, minister of environment Park Mu Jin (Jin Hee) finds himself suddenly becoming acting president of South Korea after a bombing kills all of the country's biggest politicians. As he tries his best to lead the country for the next 60 days, he starts to uncover the truth behind the bombing. Suk Ku plays Cha Young Jin, the senior administrator at the presidential office. Be Melodramatic tells the story of BFFs Jin Joo (Woo Hee), Eun Jung (Yeo Been), and Han Joo (Ji Eun), who are all struggling with life's ups and downs in their 30s. Eun Jung is a successful documentary maker who finds herself unable to move on after her fiance's death. She still sees him and talks to him. Suk Ku plays prickly commercial director Kim Sang Soo. He runs into Eun Jung a few times and ends up befriending her. The drama celebrates the beauty and pain that comes with love and friendship (yes, the drama left us teary-eyed).

  2. My Liberation Notes (2022)
Who else is in it: Kim Ji Won, Lee Min Ki, Lee El

This slice-of-life drama from the writer of My Mister has been making waves recently, thanks to its realistic portrayal of the weariness and helplessness that comes with day-to-day life. Three siblings who live outside of Seoul with their parents find their lives disrupted when mysterious Mr. Gu starts working for Banpo Sinks, their father's small business. Suddenly, the world starts getting a little bigger. Mr. Gu is an alcoholic who spends the nights gazing at the stars while drinking bottles of booze. Su Ku spends most of the drama soaked in sweat, his clothes more than just a little worn, and he has honestly never looked more charismatic. That's enough reason to watch this drama, tbh, but trust us when we say the story will have your heart hurting in the best way.

  3. BonusSense8 (2017)

Who else is in it: Bae Doona, Toby Onwumere, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemelt, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Brian J. Smith

Years later, we're still not over the sci-fi series Sense8 only having two seasons. The story revolves around eight people all over the world who share a special bond: they are mentally and emotionally linked. Award-winning actress Bae Doona stars as one of the "sensates." Sun is the daughter of a business mogul in Seoul as well as a prodigy in the underground kickboxing scene. Suk Ku appears in the second season as Detective Mun, a man tasked to arrest Sun. Their chemistry is off the charts, and Mun ends up chasing after Sun throughout the series in more ways than one. While Sense8 isn't a K-drama, *this* is the show that turned us into Suk Ku fans, so we figured you shouldn't miss out. You can check out the series on Netflix.
