Studio Ghibli has announced that it will be working on two new movies in 2020.
One of the films under production is titled How Do You Live? (Kimitachi wa D? Ikiru ka), which will be directed by the legend himself, Hayao Miyazaki. This will be Miyazaki's first feature film since 2013's The Wind Rises, which was meant to be his last film before retiring in the same year. However, the director apparently couldn't help but work on another animated film, returning to the studio he co-founded seven years after retirement.
How Do You Live? will be based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino. The plot focuses on the life of a 15-year-old boy named Koperu and his search for spiritual growth. The film was originally scheduled to be released before the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, but it looks like it will be released in 2021 or 2022.
In October 2019, it was reported that How Do You Live? was 15 percent complete after 3.5 years in production and Miyazaki is said to be directing one minute of animation each month. Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki also explained that they're experimenting with having no deadline for this Miyazaki film.
Some have claimed that How Do You Live? will be Miyazaki's last, but Suzuki believes that, "As long as he lives, [Miyazaki] will probably continue to make films."
Not much is known about the other mystery film in production this year. Studio Ghibli's New Year's statement also confirmed that the Ghibli Theme Park is well on its way to completion, pushing through with its plan to open in 2022.
