Taylor Swift appears on the cover of Vanity Fair this month, and discusses all the big stuff, like friendship, exes, and Kanye West. Plus the portrayal of women in the media, the importance of her battle with Apple, and using her power and fame for good. Cool.
First off, the question we ALL asked following the announcement of her relationship with Calvin Harris (who Ellie Goulding reportedly dated) and that seemingly not-at-all-awkward double date with Joe Jonas (the ex that dumped Taylor over the phone) and Gigi Hadid: how the heck is Taylor Swift so cool with all the dating going on within her friendship circle? Answer: there are bigger things going on. Like the power of sisterhood.
"We [...] have girls in our group who have dated the same people," says T-Swift, hero of female friendship. "It's almost like the sisterhood has such a higher place on the list of priorities for us. It's so much more important than some guy that it didn't work out with." YES.
"Sisterhood has such a higher place on the list of priorities for us. It's so much more important than some guy it didn't work out with"
"When you've got this group of girls who need each other as much as we need each other," she contines, "in this climate, when it's so hard for women to be understood and portrayed the right way in the media... now more than ever we need to be good and kind to each other and not judge each other—and just because you have the same taste in men, we don't hold that against each other." A round of applause for Taylor and her squad, transcending the final frontier of friendship.
Speaking of Taylor's journeys in friend-making, she also confirms that she's pretty much best buds with Kanye now. Because really, if you can get over post-breakup awkwardness, forgiving someone for ruining an acceptance speech is no big deal.
"I feel like I wasn't ready to be friends with [Kanye] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn't ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me—so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time. I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along... And then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I've accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid's doing."
And, finally, an update on the "Taylor Swift doing nice things!" express. She's super committed to continuing to do lovely things, drawing inspiration from other awesome women to make sure she uses her fame for greatness. "If you look at Oprah, she's made so many people happy over the years," she said. "Same thing with Angelina Jolie. She's been so productive, but she's used that position to better other people's lives, and I think that's where I'd want to be."
