If you can believe it, it's been more than four years since The Bold Type first landed on our screens. And it's been exactly three years and 364 days since we became completely obsessed with it, and with the fifth season just around the corner, we are all about finding out everything there is to know about the show. Good news, then, that Meghann Fahy, Aisha Dee, and Katie Stevens aka Sutton, Kat, and Jane stopped in for a chat with Cosmopolitan UK and revealed 12 behind-the-scenes secrets from The Bold Type.

In case you need a refresher (you definitely don't), the series follows the lives of three young women working at a global women's magazine, navigating careers, relationships and friendships, and life in New York City. Well, here's your first shocker.

1. The series was mostly shot in Canada.

Despite NYC being a huge part of the showthink SATC levelsbarely any of the The Bold Type was actually filmed there.

"We shot a little bit of on location stuff in New York in season one, but I don't think we really got to go back there after that," Aisha explained.

"We shot the pilot in Toronto," Meghann added. "And then when we got picked up to series we moved to Montreal, Quebec. The first season we did shoot in New York for a few days and then after that they were like 'meh, we're not gonna spend money on that anymore,' and we were all very sad."

"It's funny," Katie explained. "Because sometimes when I watch episodes and it does the pan over New York City, I'm like 'oh yeah, our show is set in New York!'"

      2. The cast all have the same most memorable scene.

You know the one. The yoni egg scene from series one, in which Jane takes some terrible advice to try a yoni egg and it gets stuck, forcing her to turn to Kat and Sutton to help her get it out.

"That was very technical," Katie said. "Because I had these Spanx on that were like Spanx shorts and so they kind of tucked the yoni [egg] into these shorts and that was what Aisha was putting her hands into."

      3. The sex scenes really aren't that steamy in real life.

The series is known for being pretty forward-thinking in terms of the open way it approaches sex, and of course, for the sheer spiciness of the sex scenes. But according to Meghann, Katie, and Aisha, they're really not as hot as they look.

"Everybody's always like 'what are [the sex scenes] like to shoot?' and I'm like they're very not sexual in nature because it's like, 'okay tilt your head that way,' 'can you put your nails on his back,' and it's just not as sexy as it looks."

"There was a really elaborate scene we shot that was supposed to be really sexy," Meghann added. "And they didn't use any of it and we shot it for like six hours..."

      4. During filming for Season 5, the cast wore masks for kissing scenes.

Season 5 was filmed in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, meaning that some of the closer scenes were difficult to film.

"...We couldn't have mouth-to-mouth contact so when we had to do scenes like that we were wearing a kind of prosthetic around our whole face that was basically like a mask," Katie explained. "So if the camera was on me, the guy had to be wearing it and when it was on the guy I had to be wearing it."

      5. The main cast kept things from set.

Like how the rest of us might keep the odd stack of Post-its from the office, actors often keep things from the shows they work on, and these three were no exception.

"I did steal a Scarlet mug from the conference room," Aisha admitted. "If we're in trouble everyone should know that that was actually Katie's idea."

But before you think they got to help themselves to the entire Bold Type wardrobe (can you imagine!), according to Meghann that was not the case, and any clothes or accessories they wanted to keep had to be bought and paid for.

      6. Meghann, Katie, and Aisha are all best friends in real life.

There's a reason why the friendship between the three main characters seems too real. The first time the trio met was right before they started filming on the pilot. There was an instant connection and apparently, they ended up staying out way later than they meant to, in true Bold Type fashion.

"It just kind of felt really immediate and really easy," Aisha explained. "People ask us how we built our chemistry and I honestly don't even remember doing that."

"I'm pretty sure I felt so comfortable that I peed in front of them in the first five minutes of knowing them," Katie added.

      7. The show was co-produced by former Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles.

The show was very much marketed as being inspired by Joanna Coles' life and work at Cosmo, and as a result, the icon herself was heavily involved in the show behind the scenes, executive producing the series, and meeting with key cast members ahead of filming.

      8. The cast played a lot of pranks on each other on set.

Okay, so when we say "the cast" what we really mean is Katie. According to Meghann, co-star Katie spent a lot of her time between takes devising ways to make her jump, and they usually worked perfectly.

"The adrenaline was just spiking so much after the scaring that I was immediately needing to take a nap after," Meghann explained, with Katie adding, "But I do that for you because I know how much you like to sleep." You guys!

      9. Some of the storylines are inspired by real life.

Because the show had the likes of Joanna Coles advising on it, plenty of the storylines really do reflect the reality of working on a busy women's magazine. (although not the free access to the fashion cupboard, tbh).

"Something that people say is the most realistic is the fact that Sutton is an assistant for like nine years," Meghann laughed.

"A lot of the people who worked at Cosmo and worked with Joanna Coles were contributing and sharing their stories," Aisha added.

      10. A lot of the cast have musical backgrounds.

You'll probably notice there's a fair amount of singing in the show, which all makes sense when you know the backgrounds of the main cast. Katie impressed the judges on American Idol at just 16 years old, while Meghann was on Broadway and Aisha sings in her very own band Dee Dee And The Beagles. The fact that the three of them have such incredible singing abilities is one of the main reasons fans have long called for a musical episode. We're into it.

      11. The scene where Jane, Sutton, and Kat run into each other is real...

Another one of the show's pretty iconic moments comes in Season 1, Episode 2, when Kat, Jane, and Sutton collide into each other in a cafe while carrying juice, causing a massive and messy pile-up. It turns out, the reason the fall looked so real is because it was.

"We did it about six times and I said to the director 'I think we got it, because if I do again I'm gonna fall,' and I jinxed myself because we did it one more time and I fell," Katie said. "I literally just fell out of frame and hit the ground so hard...but that's the take that they used."

      12. There could be a Bold Type movie on the horizon.

"We've all talked about how in a couple of years from now we'd be down to do a movie," Katie explained. "But we're also all in agreement that if we do the movie it has to be shot in New York."

"Meghann has been pitching this idea where she [Sutton] moves to upstate New York or Connecticut and has a little farm out there," Aisha added. "And I really like the idea of seeing the Bold Type girls in the country with some chickens and stuff."

So do we, Aisha. So do we.
