Tom Hanks And Rita Wilson Tested Positive For COVID-19 And Are Taking It One Day At A Time

They got tested after experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus disease in Australia.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are the first Hollywood celebrities to reveal that they tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In an Instagram post today, March 12, Tom said they got tested after experiencing symptoms of the virus in Australia. “We felt a bit tired, like we had [the cold] and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too." 

“To play things right, as is needed in the world right now,” they got tested and were found to have COVID-19. The married couple, who are both 63 years old, will be kept isolated and under observation “for as long as public health and safety requires.”

The actor said, “Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves!”

The couple is in Australia for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley movie, where Tom will play the music icon’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. According to Variety, the movie is in pre-production and filming hasn’t started. 

Distributor Warner Bros. said in a statement that they’re “working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the [company member who tested positive for COVID-19].” They said, “The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 is currently receiving treatment.” 

Since COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019, over 115,000 people have been infected and over 4,200 people have died around the world, according to CNN. Today, March 12, the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic.

In the Philippines, there are 49 confirmed cases as of the latest count. Yesterday, March 11, the Department of Health confirmed the death of a 67-year-old woman, the first Filipino national casualty. She’s the second patient to die of COVID-19 in the country, with the first being a 44-year-old Chinese man.
