On Wednesday, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit released its newest issue, and Tyra Banks is one of three cover stars (the two others include soccer star Alex Morgan and reporter Camille Kostek). On the magazine, she sports a yellow string bikini and looks, as Tyra herself would probably describe, straight-up FIERCE. She officially retired from modeling in 2005, but now, at 45 years old, she is back on a cover and looks better than ever.
On the '97 issue, she wore a red-and-pink polka-dot 'kini.
And 22(!!!) years later, she modeled almost the exact same style in this behind-the-scenes look:
In the BTS video, she explains how her body has changed—"My booty is bigger, everything's a little bigger"—and that the shoot felt more difficult because of it. "But after the first shot, I was like, 'I got this.'"
In an interview with the New York Times, she spoke more in-depth about her mindset beforehand:
"I started preparing for the shoot and I thought, 'Let me get it together and look like Tyra back in the day.' I was thinking, 'Oooh, I want the comments.' But then I suddenly thought, 'Why I am going to force that? I'm hungry and I want a pizza.'"
Other images feature her posing up a storm in a bright-red underwire swimsuit and a revealing blue one-piece, among other super-sexy designs.
"The message of Modelland is basically the same as ANTM. The definition of beauty can be expanded. The world is moving so fast and the industry needs to play catch-up. Things we were talking about 20 years ago are now realities. The modeling industry of the future will not look like what it does today. Anyone with a phone on a camera can be a model. And Modelland will be a place where you can come and be celebrated and be a fantasy version of yourself."
The takeaway? She's making big moves, and her tweet basically sums everything up. Love ya, Tyra!!!
