Netflix animated series Trese has been a hot topic on social media ever since it dropped on June 13. Based on the Filipino komik series made by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisismo, Trese follows the protagonist Alexandra Trese on her quest to maintain the balance between the human world and the Underworld.
The show is dubbed in three different languages: English, Filipino, and Japanese. The Filipino dub sees homegrown actress Liza Soberano as the protagonist's voice. Liza's voice acting has been met with mixed reactions on social media, with some people expressing disappointment in Liza's performance, and some defending her and complimenting the actress on her first voice acting venture.
Even professional voice-over talent Inka Magnaye, who's been dazzling netizens with her versatile VO skills, commended Liza's performance as Alex. "Liza Soberano's voice is perfect for the character. It's got a great balance of youthfulness and grim. A bit more exaggeration could have added more dimension, even an exaggeration of a deadpan delivery (think Daria). But other than that, I'm liking it so far!" Inka tweeted.
Aside from defending Liza, Inka also gave fans a snippet of what Alexandra Trese would sound like if she were to voice the character. Check out her TikTok video here:
#duet with @maronnecruz here's my modest try at doing Trese! I feel like my voice sounds a little too "mature" for the role, but this was fun to do!? original sound - Maronne Cruz
Netizens who were impressed with Inka's delivery of the lines left her comments on Twitter. For the record, though, Inka personally thinks that her voice is too mature for the young Trese and stands by her statement that Liza is the ~perfect~ fit for the role. She does, however, expressed interest in joining the cast to be the voice of a new character and also advocated for having more professional voice actors in future animated series. Fingers crossed for Season 2!
