Does Drinking Lead to a Longer Life?

A new study shows that abstaining from alcohol leads to a shorter life.

Is this for real? According to a new study, people who consume alcohol are less likely to die young compared to those who abstain from drinking.

The study, which was conducted over a 20-year period, consisted of 1,824 participants aged 55-65. The researchers took note of the participants’ socioeconomic status and level of activity during the course of the study. Psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin found that mortality rates were highest for those who had never had a sip (60%), lower for heavy drinkers, and lowest for moderate drinkers who enjoyed one to three drinks per day.

This discovery can be attributed to the fact that because of the social environment involved in drinking (e.g. parties, etc.), regular drinkers tend to have stronger social networks, which are essential for maintaining mental and physical health. On the other hand, those who abstained demonstrated greater signs of depression.

Interesting tidbit, don’t you think? But that doesn’t mean you should be reckless in drinking. It still has harmful side effects: cancer, dependency, poor judgment, and humiliation (Yup, don’t even think about drunk dialing you ex!). So drink up, but drink responsibly!
