It's no secret that chocolate often helps to make that time of the month just a little less excruciating, and thanks to a Swiss chocolatier, there could be another great reason to indulge in the comforting sweet treat.

Marc Widmer, of Lucerne-based company Chocolate With Love, claims to have created a chocolate bar that can help to relieve period pain.

According to The Independent, the "Frauenmond" bar, which translates to "women's moon," contains 60% cocoa solids and 17 Swiss mountain herbs that can ease menstrual cramps. Its alleviating properties are said to come from the herbs and the serotonin found in cocoa, which can have a soothing effect on the body when combined.

Speaking to 20 Minuten, Widmer described his creation as "reassuring, harmonising, and at the same time very delicious." He added that "of course men can also eat the chocolate."

However, Widmer warned that the chocolate bar should not be treated as medicine and priced at 12.50 Swiss francs (around P600) per 100 grams, it's considered to be a more expensive option when it comes to period pain relief.

The news of this cure to cramps comes after researchers discovered why women crave chocolate before menstruation.

According to the study, women hanker after foods which will make them feel better as serotonin levels often dip before a period. So, whether the "women's moon" bar takes off or not, indulging in your favourite chocolate bar could be just what your body needs for a happiness boost.
