The Cosmo Girl's Guide To Date Rape Drugs

Make sure no one takes advantage of you on a night out.

What's a date rape drug?

Date rape drugs, predator drugs, or club drugs are drugs used to assist in sexual assaultany sexual activity that you're not agreeing to. They can be any drug that incapacitates you and makes you vulnerable to assault.

As of today, the most common date rape drug used here in the Philippines is gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), aka liquid ecstasy. In bars or clubs, it's called "G," "Liquid X," "Liquid E," "Juice," and "Fantasy." It's estimated to cost P10,000 per 100 milliliters.

What does it look like?

GHB can be in the form of a clear liquid with no odor or color, a white powder, or a white round pill. It can make a drink taste slightly salty.

Other common date rape drugs include rohypnol (a small round white pill or a greenish grayish one) and ketamine (can be in clear liquid or in white powder form).

Are date rape drugs usually just slipped into my drink?

They're usually slipped into your drink when you're not looking or even before you're handed the drink.

Note that alcohol can be considered a date rape drug, too. When you've had too much to drink, your behavior can be affected. You can become weak and defenseless to sexual advances, and you can even blackout. That puts you at risk of being sexually assaulted. It's possible that instead of slipping a pill in your drink, a random guy would just keep buying you drinks.

What can they do to my body?

Date rape drugs have a quick effect on your body. GHB takes about 15 minutes to take effect, and can last for three or four hours. You can feel relaxed or drowsy, dizzy and nauseous, or dreamy. You can have difficulty seeing and breathing. You can get sweaty. You can get a seizure or get into a coma, and dieyou can overdose from it.

Rohypnol can take effect in 30 minutes and last for several hours. It usually makes the victim look and act drunk, with trouble standing and slurred speech. Ketamine has immediate effects, like make you unable to move and make you lose your sense of time and identity. It can also cause memory problems.

How will I know if I was drugged or raped?

If your clothes are torn, you could've been raped, or if you feel like you had sex but can't remember doing it. You can also feel hungover and disoriented, and have no memory of the previous night after having a drink.

What should I do after being drugged?

Get checked up right away. You can have your urine tested for presence of drugs. GHB leaves the body in 12 hours, so if you can help it, don't urinate before getting tested.

Don't fix up, too. How you look can be evidence of rape. Check with a hospital.

If you feel traumatized, you can seek counseling help and treatment.

How do I protect myself?

Don't take drinks from other people. Open containers yourself, or watch the bartender open a new bottle and pour you a drink. Always keep your drink with you. If you need to go to the toilet, take your drink with you, or leave your drink but order a new one when you get back. And stick to a friend, a sober one as much as possible!
