If you’re sitting right now while reading this, we suggest you stand up and take a walk after.
It turns out you don't get the full benefits of your exercise if you spend more than half of your day sitting down. According to a report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, sitting too much can cancel out your hard efforts at the gym.
Dr. David Alter, a heart expert from the University of Toronto and senior scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and his colleagues, who conducted the study, discovered that people who sit too much are more prone to higher rates of hospitalization, heart disease, cancer, and early death. And yes, even those who exercise regularly are affected by this.
Dr. Alter suspects that this happens because the amount of time people spend sitting down overshadows the calories you burn while exercising. This is why moving around occasionally is not enough. Not only should you exercise more, but you should also try to sit less. Take a short walk around your office or home every half hour. Studies show that you can burn twice as many calories by simply standing.
