The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced on Friday, April 24, that they will start looking into the possible effects of ingesting virgin coconut oil for the patients who have contracted COVID-19.
DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña said that the agency has received the go signal from the government to start clinical trials of using virgin coconut oil as a health supplement for people infected with COVID-19. The patients confined in the Philippine General Hospital in Manila and Santa Rosa Community Hospital in Laguna will be taking part in the experiment.
The patients who will give their consent to take part in the trials will include VCO in their daily diet to assess whether they will recover faster than those who won't ingest the oil. Dela Peña cited multiple prior studies that claim that VCO has anti-viral properties.
Dr. Fabian Dayrit, professor emeritus at Ateneo de Manila University's Department of Chemistry, backed this up in an interview with ABS-CBN News. He explained that when coconut oil is ingested, enzymes in the body metabolize it, releasing monolaurin and lauric acid. Monolaurin, in particular, is used to protect farm animals against bacteria and viruses.
As of this writing, the country has 7,958 infected patients. With that, 975 people have recovered, while 530 passed away.
