Fans of Super Junior's Yesung spent a *beautiful night* with the artist on Saturday, January 6 at the New Frontier Theater. Filo ELFs (Super Junior's fandom) and Clouds (Yesung's individual fandom) got to witness the art-like voice of the veteran idol as he performed a selection of his discography during Unfading Sense in Manila, his first-ever solo concert in the Philippines.
Currently on tour to promote his latest mini-album titled Unfading Sense, Yesung sang a total of 19 songs and showcased his creative side through the use of stunning backdrops and aesthetically pleasing VCRs. If you're suffering from PCD (post concert depression) like me, then here's a recap of my favorite moments from his show.
10 Best Moments from Yesung's Unfading Sense in Manila Concert
1. Super Junior's fans are truly Ever Lasting Friends.
As a longtime ELF, I knew I had to get to the concert venue early in order to truly appreciate all the fan projects perpared by fan clubs and groups of friends (special mention to Clouds PH, Cloud Chasers PH, Yesung Fillet and Jadeykyu, and SJ Lovers PH). Aside from the creative merch and freebies, there were several Yesung standees and photobooths for fans to enjoy (the Mouse Rabbit mobile was so cute!)), and the banners + flower crown collection were incredibly organized!
2. Yesung showed so much love for the Philippines during his entire concert.
During his third ment, Yesung shared that when he performed abroad sometimes his Korean jokes would get lost in translation. "Then I realize, 'if only I learned Tagalog...'" he began to say, causing fans to scream their support. "How I wish the world spoke only one language! It's a little frustrating, isn't it?" When the fans immediately shouted "Yes!" Yesung was quick to turn it around on us: "So why don't you learn Korean?" LOL!
According to Yesung, the Philippines has honestly become one of Super Junior's favorite destinations(!). "So after this show tonight, I still hope that in this year 2024, we'll still have another chance to see each other," he stated.
3. Yesung got a haircut to show his best side to fans!
Unfading Sense in Manila was Yesung's first concert stop for 2024, so he took it upon himself to get a haircut in order to look his best for his fans. When he asked the crowd whether they prefer him with long or short hair, everyone chanted in unison "pogi!"—and the interpreter made sure he knew what we meant!
4. Yesung added a fan favorite song to his Manila setlist.
I literally started tearing up when I heard the intro notes to this song. "It Has To Be You" is a song I've always dreamed of seeing performed live (despite how much Eunhyuk teases the song on variety shows like Knowing Bros, he's also sung it live on Sukira!), and I'm sure I wasn't the only one screaming in surprise when he added it to the setlist! Yesung thanked PH ELFs and Clouds for singing along to his OST from the 2010 K-drama Cinderella's Sister.
Bringing back this throwback moment—did any of you attend Super Show 3 in Manila (2011) when Yesung last performed "It Has To Be You" in the Philippines?
Fun fact: the song is a favorite at weddings, and Yesung actually sang it in person as a guest several times—most notably during the ceremony of Leeteuk's older sister Park In Young!
5. Yesung revealed that he wanted "Corazón perdido (Lost Heart)" as his title song.
"Every time I sing "Corazón perdido (Lost Heart), I really really wish that this was my title song," he explained. "I feel really frustrated that it didn't become my title song, probably due to the decisions of other people in my company, but I'm pretty sure you also like "Beautiful Night," right?"
NGL Yesung, this was my favorite song from your 2021 mini album so I'm glad we share the same taste!
6. Filipino fans prepared a special gift for Yesung.
The surprise video featured Yesung's photocards, Yesung dolls, and Super Junior's lightstick shown at different places in the Philippines, including:
- Banaue Rice Terraces
- Casa Gerardo Cebu
- Cebu Heritage Monument
- Fort San Pedro, Cebu
- the mountain view in Atok, Benguet
- Kagikan Museum, Tagum City, Davao del Norte
- Magellan's Cross, Cebu
- Ayala Triangle Garden (Dancing Lights)
- Maligcong Rice Terraces, Bontoc, Mountain Province
- Art Galleries (Vinyl on Vinyl, Finale Art File Gallery, Van Gogh Alive at the BGC Arts Museum)
- 2023 Yesung Birthday Fountain Show
"Wow there's a lot of beautiful places in the Philippines, thank you!" Yesung remarked after watching the fan project. And despite his constant online presence (remember when he shared the fan project instructions for Bangkok?), the singer only found out about his birthday fountain show by watching the video!
7. Yesung introduced his band members—yes, ALL of them!
What started off as a sweet gesture quickly turned into a back-and-forth between Yesung and his fans, LOL! He initially wanted to introduce half the musicians onstage but ELFs and Clouds encouraged him to complete the set.
8. Yesung was heartfelt and *incredibly* honest throughout the show.
During the ment before his last song, Yesung opened up to fans about his thoughts on his solo tour: "It’s my first time to go to different cities, different countries by myself. And, of course, it was all possible because you gave a lot of support to my album as well. And I am very happy because this kind of tour is something that I always dreamed of."
"I'm just being very honest with all of you. A lot of things came to my thoughts: if things didn't happen in 2023 for various reasons, I came to realize that this new year I should probably prepare myself more to show you different aspects of myself."
"As much as I’m gonna try my best, I also have to do more efforts to come see you more often. And I really want to tell all of you that despite all these years that we’ve been together, I really want to say thank you, sincerely, for still continuing your support to come and see me every time. Thank you so much. Please stay healthy and take care of yourself until we meet again."
9. Yesung versus his Filipino fans—an ongoing (teasing) battle.
"Can you be honest: Raise your hand, those who really liked us from our first album? Please be honest!" Yesung curiously asked during his ment. "Are you sure? That means everyone who raised their hands, matanda na tayong lahat." LOL!
"I still want you to remember: As fans all of you are aging with me, and when I see adolescents undergoing puberty they're too shy to come and see us. Or sometimes they tell me they're my fan, but they're not following me on SNS." Please do follow suju's SNS king—if you enjoy art museums and travel vlogs, check out his YouTube channel Yessay!
"But as you remember me back in those days, I still look at you and you're still the ELF that I fell in love with back then." Despite his snarkiness at times, Yesung can truly be sentimental and sweet as well. Aww!
10. Yesung versus smartphones: the actual biggest battle of the night!
During his ments, Yesung would comment on the crowd's use of smartphones and how we need to better take care of our eyes (he wore glasses for parts of the concert!). In fact, he spent nearly 3 minutes teasingly ranting about it!
"Early I kept moving forward because I wanted to do more eye contact with you...[but] you weren't looking int o my eyes because you were all on your cellphones. I looked at 80% of you in the eye but all of you were looking at your phones," Yesung began.
"It's not important that your filming me, isn't it more important that we make eye contact?" he continued. "Earlier I told you to take care of your eyes. How will you look me in the eyes if you're all on your cellphones? If you really want to do this, maybe do your video clips in between. But please prioritize looking into my eyes!"
"I tried my best to give you all eye contact, but at this moment there are still people on their cellphones. Maybe it's a sign that I won't do eye contact anymore. I'll just make eye contact with your phones," he teased. "Those at the back were sincerely looking at me so I will try to attempt doing my eye contact with you. Those at the front I'll look at your phones." LOL, we love it when idols are so comfortable teasing and being ~savage~ with fans!
Yesung, thank you for a delightful two hours of ~artistry~. We look forward to you coming back—whether as a soloist, or as part of Super Show 10! (We're keeping our fingers crossed for a Super Junior K.R.Y. concert tour, though!)
