Cosmo Challenge: Stand Up Against Sex Trafficking

Featured

Just because you don't see it happening doesn't mean that it isn't going on.

Sex trafficking happens here and all over the world, and according to 2007 data from UNICEF, 1.2 million of the 2.5 million (and more) people who are trafficked are younger than 18 years old. They can be as young as 5. More often than not, the sex is non-c0nsensual. These kids are abused and raped, more than once every night. And it's a lucrative industry, because it pulls in around US$27 billion a year.

Horrified? You should be, especially since this is also happening right here in the Philippines. The Philippines has the fourth-highest number of prostituted children in the world. But what can you do about it?

It's as simple as signing a petition and spreading awareness that these atrocities are happening. The Body Shop wants to provide the venue for that. Their "Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People" campaign seeks to bring this issue into the public consciousness, as well as help raise funds through their Soft Hands, Kind Heart Hand Cream.

All the proceeds from the hand cream go straight to ECPAT International (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography, and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) and its affiliate organizations, to aid in their efforts to help victims of trafficking. You see, you can make a huge difference, even with something as kikay as purchasing a beauty product.
