Filipino-Made 'Pinyapel' Wins Environment And Sustainability Award In New York

This local product from CDO receives international recognition!

A Filipino invention called "Pinyapel" just won an award from the Design and Art Direction Future Impact Awards for Environment and Sustainability! Pinyapel was made as a response to the growing global problem of plastic waste. Alongside other creative products, it will be awarded in the Impact Showcase on November 6, 2019 in New York City.

Launched by an agency under the Department of Trade and Industry called the Design Center of the Philippines, Pinyapel is made from "waste pineapple leaves transformed into sustainable, locally-made specialty paper," according to a video shared by DTI Region 10 on Facebook.

Pinyapel is described to be "water-resistant, making it a good choice for paper cups, bowls and various food container options resulting to a reduced amount of agricultural waste aligning with the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal of responsible production and consumption" in DTI's official press release.

This project was developed under the DTI - Design Center of the Philippines, in collaboration with Nature's Fresh Pineapples, Ideatechs Packaging, and the Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper Crafts, a store founded by Ms. Lolita “Luchi” B. Cabanlet.

The Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper Crafts also makes products out of abaca fiber and pulp, cogon grass, rafia, rattan, bamboo, and mahogany wood. You can check out their other products such as lampshades, notepad frames, and other novelty items here.
