We dissected the 40 second teaser HYBE released to find out as much as we can about the up-and-coming BTS recipe book, BTS Recipe Book: Tasty Stories, so you don't have to. ARMY knows that official BTS merchandise typically means quite an investment, so here are some facts ARMY should know before checking out!
Here's what we know about BTS Recipe Book: Book Of Tasty Stories
1. BTS RECIPE BOOK: Book Of Tasty Stories
There's a lot of information we can get from the title alone: that we'll get plenty of BTS-related recipes, but also, with the phrase "tasty stories" is that this will also be a trip down memory lane. We expect that similar to their latest album Proof, this cookbook will also be an anthology but instead of songs, we get nostalgic recipes and foodie moments ARMY shared with BTS over the years.
This is even more special as BTS is known for their love for food. From the Jin Eats vlog, the BTS Festa dinners, cooking episodes on RUN BTS, and the feasting V-Lives, food is practically folded into the band. This is partly explained by BTS' South Korean culture, as they, like Filipinos, express hellos with "Have you eaten?" and say goodbyes by promises of sharing a meal.
2 It will sell out fast.
News covered how BTS' Artist-Made merch sold out so fast this year (we're talking seconds!), even Lea Salonga couldn't score. As that particular collection received more marketing hype, the recipe book might not sell out as quickly, especially with some ARMY's critique on HYBE over this particular merchandise, but we expect it to still follow the successful trajectory of most BTS merchandise.
So, if you're keen on getting your hands on this physical cookbook, you best be ready as purchasing official merchandise from the Philippines is not so simple. Not to worry: The end of this article has a guide!
3. The look of the global and Japanese editions.
The book will be published in two versions. Both covers have a thin, graphic script on brightly-colored hardcovers: The golden yellow Japanese edition and the green global edition use both the original Korean text and English translations.
Glossy pages will be in full color, rendered in a minimalist theme, with food photography featuring high-contrast, detailed food subjects, and bright but discreet single-color backgrounds.
4. They will have In The SOOP 2 recipes.
In The SOOP made ARMY two things: Relaxed over the vicarious vacation, and hungry over the tasty meals BTS themselves cooked and feasted over. The show's domestic setting offered a relatable glimpse of kitchen scenes: unvexed by the pressure of a Run BTS challenge, it showed a laxness to their diets that make the dishes so easy to imagine having for yourself.
Two recipes that are definitely in the book: Jin's janchi guksu and V's nurungji gwaja.
As BTS' main chef, Jin prepared janchi guksu, a warm noodle dish served in a light broth for breakfast. Jin did the mise en place for the different components, leaving them in the open-spaced kitchen, where members could construct their bowls when they woke up. Jungkook prepared V's bowl and was thinking about leaving out the chillis for V's spice-sensitive palate.
V channeled his childhood memories when he prepared nurungji gwaja on a whim as a snack for him and the members. These crunchy, sweet crackers made of leftover rice is a childhood treat his mom used to make for him.
We hope though, that we get plenty more In The SOOP recipes! Here's to hoping that refreshing hwachae, fresh sashimi, luxurious sirloin sandwiches, relatable japagetti, and experimental croiffles also feature. We're especially crossing our fingers for Suga's crab dip hors d'oeuvre made purely out of his secretly soft heart for J-Hope and Jimin!
5. You'll get classic Korean recipes too!
Other recipes included are iconic Korean food that has been repeatedly talked about, craved, cooked, or eaten by BTS are the famous Korean fried chicken, chewy and saucy tteokbokki (rice cakes), K-drama-like ramyeon (fresh veggies with instant noodles), healthy pajeon (scallion pancakes), handmade sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup), comforting dak-bokkeumtang (spicy chicken stew), classic kimchi bokkeumbap (Kimchi fried rice), easy soy sauce glazed chicken, and the iconic hotteok (sweet pancakes).
Recipes also come with information on difficulty level, diet information, and key features of the dish. Whether your cooking skills are on par with god-of-destruction RM or head chefs Jin and Suga, the useful tags in the recipe will help you find a recipe you can make.
6. Of course, there will be BTS photos.
Although it's unlikely a photo card will be included, the book does come with high-res full-color BTS photos from foodie moments throughout their career. As seen in this spread, we get both a photo from very early on and one that's fairly recent.
On the left is a full-group photo from their RUN BTS episode 36 where they battled over kimchi recipes. On the right, is a photo originally released for FESTA 2021 taken during the shoot of their performance of "Life Goes On" for Good Morning America.
7. Some recipes come with QR codes that will lead to video memories.
Coming from HYBE Edu which produced Korean language guides that synced with a speaker pen, this cookbook also harnesses technology for a better experience. Recipes come with QR codes that lead to matching memories and learning aides.
Intrinsic to the global superstars BTS brand is their Korean culture, which is inadvertently celebrated in the recipe book. In the beginning, there is a spread that usefully summarizes the quintessential Korean ingredients that will be used again and again throughout the recipe book. This page gives you a snapshot of the flavor profiles that BTS recipes and by extension, Korean cuisine, heavily use. You may be buying this book for BTS, but you're also getting a gastronomical immersion into Korean culture.
More than your average cookbook, BTS RECIPE BOOK: Book of Tasty Stories is packed not just with flavor, but also warm shared memories. For years, BTS has expressed their love for ARMY with the phrase "I purple you" to represent all the colors of the rainbow, and this book expresses their love in a spectrum of flavors.
How to Buy BTS RECIPE BOOK: Book of Tasty Stories
There are three ways you can get your hands on this unique recipe book.
1. Through the Official WeVerse Store.
- 1. Set up an account with WeVerse Global, which will give you access to the BTS Recipe Book Global edition.
- 2. Ready your payment details on the WeVerse Shop App. Paypal is the easiest and fastest to navigate; this is especially important during the blitz of the payment process. Debit and credit accounts are known to glitch. As of March 2022, G-Cash can also be used.
- 3. Find a local seller who offers a Korean address rental. They will provide you with an address in Korea you can input into your WeVerse account. You'll be paying them to use their address so that your items can be shipped to their address in Korea before it's then shipped to the Philippines. This is to circumvent the fact that the Philippines is out of WeVerse's geographical coverage. You can find these sellers on IG, Twitter, and Facebook.
- 4. Go to the WeVerse Shop at the launch date and time and prepare to refresh, add to the cart, and check out faster than thousands of other ARMY. We strongly advise getting on a fast WiFi.
- 5. Buying straight from the Official Weverse Store is a 100% guarantee your item is authentic, and you also get a cash coupon to use for your next purchase.
- 6. Once the item is shipped to the Korean address, you will then have to pay for shipment to the Philippines.
- 7. Your item will arrive at your doorstep after at least three months. You can track your package in Korea through the app.
2. Through a local vendor
You can skip the tedious process altogether by getting in cahoots with a local vendor, the same vendor you're renting a Korean address from. Of course, it comes with risks, as you cannot be sure they'll get to buy one for you as stocks run out quickly. They do have a better chance though, thanks to their experience. Also, make sure that you find a well-rated and reviewed local vendor to avoid getting scammed.
While this can be cheaper, you won't get the WeVerse cash coupon as the vendor will be using their own WeVerse account. The item will arrive in at least 3 months as well and you can ask for follow-ups from the vendor on where your item is.
3. Wait for resellers
After the frenzied launch, there will always be resellers on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or eBay. However, resale prices come with a high premium. As the merch gets more scarce, it typically also racks up in price.
Of course, BTS loves ARMY even if they can't afford BTS' premium merchandise. So if you can't buy this book, why not check out Yummy PH's Korean recipes that are actually free?
