If you were planning on baking a cake but either never got around to it or just don't have the ingredients, you're in luck. You can hack that boxed cake mix and make something with it other than just cake! Just like you can hack a pancake mix to make mini doughnuts or a brownie mix to make cookies instead of brownies, a boxed cake mix can be a versatile ingredient in your kitchen, too.

Here are genius ways to hack that boxed cake mix into something else:

  1. Make it into pancakes.

Use the mix to make these pancakes instead. The best news is that these cake batter pancakes work with any boxed cake mix so you can have pancakes of different flavors—red velvet, banana, or even a basic yellow cake batter. This breakfast will make your morning better.

  2. Whip up some chocolate pudding.

You don't need to use up the entire box of cake mix to make this easy chilled dessert. This no-bake idea doesn't even require any special equipment. A bit of chocolate cake mix can be transformed into this chocolate pudding but if you have other cake mix flavors, give it a try.

  3. Make treats made with cereal.

If you have a box of cereal, why not make it into a dessert like these rice crispy treats? These are made with puffed rice but really, any cereal would work with this sticky sweet no-bake recipe. Just remember to store these in an airtight container to preserve that crunch!

  4. Upgrade it into a yema cake.

Yema cakes are easy to make from scratch but why bother with more ingredients when you can make it with less? That's really what the boxed cake mix is for. Try this easy yema cake recipe that will trigger your nostalgic side. Some grated cheese, liberally shaved, would not be odd on top of this cake!

  5. Make cupcakes and stuff it.

If a cake is too intimidating to make, maybe the smaller cupcake is the easier option for you. Try making these decadent peanut butter cupcakes. These are stuffed with a simple peanut butter cup but you can press any candy in the batter! Caramel squares, chocolate candies, or even a simple dollop of peanut butter into the center can be the difference between an ordinary and extraordinary tasting dessert.

  6. Make cookies!

Cookies are easy and delicious handheld desserts that anyone will enjoy. If you're craving some cookies but only have cake mix, here's a hack that you can do:

Mix 1 box cake mix, 2 large eggs, and 1/4 cup vegetable oil in a large bowl. Stir in any mix-ins (chocolate chips, chopped nuts, candy-coated chocolate, crushed potato chips, etc.) you desire before scooping balls of the cookie dough onto baking sheets.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for about 12 minutes or until just slightly firm on top if underbaked. Cool on a wire rack and serve with fresh milk!
