Tourists and culture buffs can now explore the historic past of Intramuros at the palm of their hands as the Department of Tourism (DOT) and iACADEMY present Experience Philippines, an augmented reality (AR) app available on both iOS and Android.
The app houses a treasure trove of visuals and information about the walled city of Manila. The AR feature works on the DOT logo and certain sites in Intramuros. These include the Gallery of Presidents, the Fort Santiago Gate, the Ayuntamiento, the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, and the Churches of Our Lady of Lourdes, of San Ignacio, of San Francisco, and of Recollects.
With this new AR app, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said that tourists can relive the past of Intramuros with just a tap on their mobile phone screens. The DOT is also planning to do AR development for iconic tourist destinations such as the Banaue Rice Terraces, Corregidor, Mt. Samat, Puerto Princesa, Pampanga, and Mt. Pinatubo.
Meanwhile, Intramuros Administration Administrator, Atty. Guiller B. Asido said that the app can help attract more visitors to the city. He said, “Culture buffs will enjoy Intramuros more with this app as they will be able to see how Fort Santiago and other historical sites looked like before.”
To download the app, key in Experience Philippines on Google Play or App Store. To activate, tap on the “ARTech” button and point at your selected tourist site. In addition, the app also serves as a compact version of www.philippines.travel, which allows tourists to learn and explore their dream travel destinations online.
