Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have been struggling and as a result, some companies had to let go of their employees. According to reportr, "the Philippine Statistics Authority reported an unemployment rate of 10 percent in July" with an estimated 4.6 million jobless Filipinos.
As we all know, the travel industry was not spared, and flight attendants Kristine Canafranca and Erika Nera were just some of the cabin crew members who were affected. They worked for two different local airlines but because of the ongoing health crisis, they were laid off from their jobs.
To get through these trying times, they partnered up to pursue a business idea their barkada talked about. They came up with Forksilog, a small food business that offers budget-friendly tapsilog (tapa, sinangag, and itlog) meals along with other kinds of ulam. Check out their dishes below.
The two shared that they initially had doubts about their food business, especially since it's so different from their former jobs as flight attendants. But for them, what mattered most was surviving the pandemic. "Sa panahon ngayon kasi 'di ka na puwede umarte. Hindi mo na kailangan isipin na ganito lang kikitain natin, dati ganito. May family na umaasa sa'yo e, so kailangan mo talagang mag-pursige."
