Most of us are uncomfortable with change. But all the same, stepping out of your comfort zone can actually help you grow, learn, and become a stronger, more confident individual.

Whether it’s moving on from a bad relationship, or making changes in your career or lifestyle, these three Pinays show that taking that one leap of faith can bring out your best self.

“I realized that I was in an unhealthy relationship, and so I had to let it go. I focused on myself and my career. I felt stronger, more confident, and sure of myself—like good things were finally happening to me.”

KC: My boyfriend at the time couldn’t understand what I needed as someone who has anxiety. He would always say things like “You’ll get over it” or “It’s not a big deal." I knew I couldn’t stay with someone who didn't care for my mental wellbeing.

I realized that I was in an unhealthy relationship, and so I had to let it go. I focused on myself and my career. I felt stronger, more confident, and sure of myself—like good things were finally happening to me.

If it’s not working out, talk through the problem, but don’t stay in the relationship because you’re afraid of being alone and starting over. Good things happen on the other side of grief.

Achieving your dreams and goals in life is your own triumph and no one else’s. Maybe your now-ex supported you with your aspirations, but remember that you did all the grunt work. Their encouragement can only go so far. Become your own success story.

A career shift felt like a breath of fresh air. I started to focus on things I’ve always had a passion for, and to try things I never thought I’d actually be doing now.”

Nikki: I studied Hospitality Management in college, so I tried to pursue a career in the same industry. The problem was, I couldn’t find the time to focus on the things I wanted to do. It was almost like an all-or-nothing situation—commit to this job or quit. But I left that job behind and after a few more twists and turns, I landed a career in radio and writing. I’m also starting my own business.

A career shift felt like a breath of fresh air. I started to focus on things I’ve always had a passion for, and to try things I never thought I’d actually be doing now. Right now, it seems like I’m juggling a lot, but this is the kind of lifestyle I never knew I wanted.

Your college degree isn’t the be-all and end-all of your career. Opportunities will eventually find you. Most of all, remember that in life, there are no dead ends; sometimes you just need to shift your perspective.

The only time you fail is if you never even try, so see what happens and how far it takes you. In physics, we were taught about Schrodinger’s cat, and how you wouldn’t know if it’s alive or dead inside the box unless you open it. In the same aspect, I’d encourage others to just open the box and see it for themselves before assuming the worst-case scenario.

When I adapted a healthy lifestyle, I realized that I could change for the better.”

Sara: My unhealthy lifestyle somewhat contributed to my lack of self-confidence and self-esteem. I used to be 30 pounds overweight. I would often go on a diet to lose some of the weight, but I would just gain it back again. Because I wasn’t getting the results that I wanted, I thought I was the anomaly that could not lose weight. That mindset has stuck with me for years and prevented me from changing for the better.

Back then, consistent exercise and proper diet weren't my priorities. My sedentary hobbies such as writing, drawing, and playing video games were also a factor as to why I didn’t do much exercise.

Now, I enjoy lifting weights as well as walking more often. I'm also on a whole-food, plant-based diet.

When I adapted a healthy lifestyle, I realized that I could change for the better. I lost weight, but my mental health also improved. I became more confident with myself. This confidence eventually translated to me believing that I can achieve anything! If I, an average individual, managed to change for the better, then anyone else can.

Ending a relationship, changing careers, and making lifestyle changes can be daunting. However, these women are living proof that taking risks and breaking free from unhealthy habits can bring forward positive changes.
