To No One's Surprise, Japan Has The World's Most Powerful Passport In 2021

Remember the days of making an itinerary, planning those Instagram-worthy OOTDs, and waiting excitedly at the airport with your passport in hand? Me neither. With so many countries around the world about to enter lockdown once again, the COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed the way we all travel, especially since these days, it's more advisable to stay at home to keep everyone safe. (Srsly guys, the beach can wait.)

But travel is necessary for some, and if you're curious, the Henley & Partners Passport Index has released its report on the world's most powerful passports in 2021. ICYDK, the ranking is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), covering 199 passports and 227 travel destinations. For 2021, note that they did not take into consideration temporary travel restrictions.

Topping the list is Japan: Before our new normal, Japanese passport holders are able to visit 191 countries without a visa! It was a tight race with Singapore, a country with access to 190 countries. South Korea and Germany share the third spot (with a score of 189). Check out the complete list:

But there are also several places that have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to fewer than 40 countries including North Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and more.
