On October 29, Filipina-Japanese Yuki Sonoda was crowned Miss Universe Japan 2020 second runner-up! In an interview with Summit Media, she mentioned that she's grateful for the overwhelming support she's received from the Filipino community. "Actually, nagulat po ako. Ang daming nag-message sa akin. Ang daming nag-congratulate."
Yuki has always dreamed of joining pageants ever since she was young. She joined Miss Philippines-Japan, her first pageant, when she was 19 years old. Out of all the half-Filipina and half-Japanese contestants, she was crowned third runner-up. Yuki continued to join different local and international pageants after that. Next year, she'll be representing Japan in Miss Charm International 2021.
She shared that prioritizing family is one important lesson she learned from her Filipina mom. Even if she lives alone now, she makes an effort to go to her parents' house on her days off from work, just to spend some quality with them. Yuki says, "'Yun yung pinaka-important Filipino trait na tinuro niya sa akin. Kahit lumaki kayo, kahit na maging adult kayo, [kahit] meron kayong sariling pamilya niyo, babalik ulit kayo dito sa family natin."
For pageants, Yuki considers being biracial as an advantage because she gets the support of not just one country, but two. "Super masaya rin ako kasi napasaya ko ang mga Filipino people kasi gustung-gusto ko talaga ang Philippines. And also, at the same time, na-feel ko rin na 'pag may ginawa pala ako sa other countries na ganito, magiging proud rin pala yung Filipino people for me. I was so happy to realize that."
