Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said that the Metro Manila wage board has approved the minimum monthly salary increase of house helpers from P3,500 to P5,000.

In an interview with Ted Failon on DZMM, Secretary Bello said that the P1,500 wage increase will be published in major newspapers on December 2 and the increase will take effect 15 days after publication of the notice.

Ted asked Secretary Bello what would happen if employers do not abide by the new wage increase. To this, the labor secretary said, “‘Yun ang problema. Mabibigyan lang natin sila ng compliance order. Pero wala kaming sapat na kapangyarihan para parusahan sila, ‘yun ang pagkukulang ng ating batas.

Secretary Bello also said that the wage increase will apply to other regions. However, the increase will vary from P500 to P1,000 depending on the location.
