On September 7, 2020, #JusticeForJenniferLaude started trending on Twitter, right after President Duterte pardoned U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton, who was convincted of killing transgender Filipina Jennifer Laude in 2014. The following year, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was set for "early release" for having full credits of the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA).
In a recorded speech aired on Monday, September 7, President Duterte explained, "Ito ang tingin ko sa kaso: We have not treated Pemberton fairly. It is not the fault of Pemberton na hindi na-compute. We should allow him the good character presumption. Wala naman nag-report na Marines na nagwala siya."
Many have slammed the president's decision to grant Pemberton an "absolute pardon," with people speaking up about the injustice surrounding the case and what it means for transgender rights in the Philippines.
