Duathlete Monica Torres Wins Gold At The SEA Games And Helps Out Runner-Up From Thailand

Monica Torres won the gold medal for the Philippines at the duathlon event of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games yesterday, December 2, in Subic, Zambales. She finished the 10 km run, 40 km bike, and five km run event in 2:08:44, according to ABS-CBN News.

Her big win is even more amazing considering she had an upset stomach prior to the race. "Expected ko na malakas ang bike ko, pero ang totoo, naisuka ko lahat ng nutrition and gels ko,” she said. "Malaking tulong po ang mga taong sumusuporta. Inisip ko na lang na I will not let them down.”

“Sabi nga natin, ‘We win as one,’” she said, according to Spin. “Malaking karangalan na mag-represent ng bansa, and the best thing about it is having the opportunity na ipakita sa mundo na maraming talented na Filipinos pati ang quality natin na pagiging matiisin tsaka matapang.”

Following Monica, Thailand’s Pareeya Sonsem finished at 2:11:18 and Vietnam’s Thi Phuong Trunh Nguyen at 2:14:20. When Pareeya stumbled to the ground after crossing the finish line, Monica helped her get back on her feet, as seen in photos posted on Spin.

According to Inquirer, Monica is the reigning duathlon women’s titleholder in Asia and the fastest Filipina at the Cobra Ironman 70.3 for six years in a row. The 2012 Cosmo Fun Fearless Female awardee is also the “only Filipina racing professionally for non-drafting triathlons around the world.”
