At the end of every year, we await the announcement of Pantone, the global authority for color communication and inspiration, for the new color of the year. For 2021, two hues were chosen: "Ultimate Gray" and "Illuminating." According to them, they represented "a marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting."

For 2022, Pantone has officially unveiled Very Peri, a "dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone," as the color of the year. According to the institute's website, this hue is "a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through."

The mix of blue (which is often associated with stability) with hints of red (the color that usually evokes excitement and newness) resulted in a warm, periwinkle blue hue that aims to symbolize a fresh new start for the incoming year.

It is also the first time that the institute has created a brand-new color instead of choosing from their pre-existing archive of hues. Accordingly, it's symbolic of the significant changes taking place in the world right now, following a year of intense isolation, fear, and uncertainty.

"It was really important for us to come up with a new color, because we have a very new vision of the world now," Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone, noted in a statement. "The color symbolizes the future—it has that sprightly, joyous attitude that we're talking about, that carefree confidence, and creative spirit."

What do you think of 2022's color of the year?
