In an Instagram post on November 18, Phil announced his retirement from professional football as he wrote, “Hanging up my boots! Thank you to my bosses, my coaches, teammates, competitors, and all the supporters who have been part of my journey. See you all soon in a new adventure.”
Phil is credited to be one of the key players in the revival of football’s popularity in the country. The Azkals team captain began his professional football career in 2005 when he signed with the English football club Chelsea, CNN Philippines reported.
Phil joined the Azkals for the first time when he joined his first national game in 2005 at the Southeast Asian Games. He later moved to the Philippines, with his elder brother James Younghusband becoming the face of the Azkals.
According to a report from Inquirer.net, Phil’s career as a football player is best remembered in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup held in Hanoi, Vietnam. Phil suffered a bout of food poisoning the night before but he won the Philippines a 2-0 victory which is considered as one of the “biggest upsets in tournament history.” The match is reportedly called the “Miracle in Hanoi.”
Phil last played with the Azkals in the Asian Cup in January 2019. He is known as one of the top scorers of the Philippines with 52 goals and 108 appearances.
