Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio just took home the gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held in Ulan-Ude, Russia on October 13.
The 27-year-old boxer bested Russian Liudmila Vorontsove in a three-round affair but settled for a split decision. According to a report, “Three of the judges 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for Petecio, while the other two had it 30-27 and 29-28 for the Russian.”
During the semifinals held on October 12, Nesthy won the Philippines a silver medal after she beat England’s Karris Artingstall, 4-1, in the featherweight semi-final of the AIBA World Boxing Championship.
Along with Nesthy bagging a boxing gold medal, the country is also celebrating another sports win this weekend as Carlos Yulo became the first Filipino gymnast to win a gold medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
