President Rodrigo Duterte said he will ban the use and importation of e-cigarettes or vaping devices, according to ABS-CBN News. “I am now ordering law enforcement agencies to arrest anybody vaping in public. That is like smoking.”
The president said, “It is toxic, and the government has the power to issue measures to protect public health and public interest.” He said the executive order from his office formalizing the ban will follow.
Earlier this month, Pasay City banned vaping in public spaces and implemented stricter measures against both vaping and smoking.
It was also this month that the first case of vaping-related lung illness was confirmed in the Philippines. The patient is a 16-year-old girl from Visayas who had been vaping for six months while also smoking cigarettes. The Department of Health (DOH) said she had “severe shortness of breath” and needed oxygen supplementation. She was soon brought to the Internal Care Unit.
