Expect A P1.50 Refund In Your GrabPay Wallet If You Booked A Grab Ride From February To May 2019

Grab was recently slapped with a P23.45 million fine by an antitrust watchdog group.

On November 18, antitrust watchdog Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) slapped ride-hailing app Grab with P23.45 million of fines. They also ordered the company to refund passengers about P5 million in overcharges, GMANews reported.

The PCC said that it has “resolved to impose a total fine of P23.45 million on Grab for breaching its pricing commitments during the first to third quarters of the initial undertaking.” The watchdog also said that the fines were imposed because Grab had “failed to meet the commitments it made to the government.”

On November 22, GMANews reported that Grab will abide by the fine and will refund about 3 million Grab riders. According to the report, the fines cover the period of February until May 2019. The breakdown is as follows: P11.3 million in penalties for the first quarter, P7.1 million for the second quarter, and P5.05 million for the third quarter.

Meanwhile, Grab Philippines president Brian Cu said in a press conference, “We respect the decision of the board, and we will be disbursing the amount to the GrabPay wallets of consumers who took Grab rides from February to May 2019, in proportion to the total spend on the rides they took.”

He also added: “So you take P5 million over three million [passengers]... Ang average a passenger can get is P1.5.” Mr. Cu clarified, “There are some who will get below a peso while some will get over a hundred pesos depende po iyon kung magkano [at] kung gaano karaming trips ang tinake niyo… Kasi, it’s five million over three million passengers.”

TopGear Philippines reported that Grab is currently working with the PCC to fine-tune the disbursement procedures and that they will inform consumers within the timeframe given by the watchdog. Mr. Cu also clarified that the fines are not a result of overcharging but “Grab deviating from the ‘fare in range’ set by the PCC. He also assured consumers that the company has been compliant with the fare matrix set by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
