SEA Games Gold Medalist Agatha Wong Calls For Strict Implementation Of Athlete's Discounts

Medalists are actually entitled to a 20 percent discount to various services.

On December 21, Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Agatha Wong aired out her frustration on Twitter as she called for strict implementation of a law that mandates businesses to provide discounts for athletes who have won in international competitions.

Agatha tweeted, “Can we make R.A. 10699 on the national athlete's discount benefits an imposed [and] required law to abide by?”

The wushu athlete added, “[It] gets quite annoying to keep having to explain to managers that this kind of benefit actually exists [and] some are even doubtful.”

The Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission recognizes and accredits Filipino athletes who have won medals in international competitions. They are eligible to cash rewards as mandated by R.A. 10699, otherwise known as the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act,” ABS-CBN reported.

According to the law, athletes are entitled to “a grant of 20 percent discount from all establishments relative to the utilization of transportation services, hotels, and other lodging establishments, restaurants, and recreation centers, and the purchase of medicine and sports equipment anywhere in the country for the actual and exclusive use or enjoyment of the national athlete and coach.”

Apart from those discounts, athletes and coaches are entitled to a 20 percent discount on admission fees charged by theaters, cinema houses, and concert halls, circuses, carnivals, and other similar places of culture, leisure, and amusement.”

R.A. 10699 also penalizes those who do not abide by the law. The first violation equates to a fine not less than P50,000 but not exceeding P100,000 or imprisonment of not less than six months but not more than two years or both. For subsequent violations, there is a fine of 100,000 but not exceeding P200,000 or imprisonment of not less than two years but not more than six years.
