4 First Date Traits To Ensure Date Two

Really want to snag that all-important second date (and go past the crucial third)? This guy reveals first-date deal-makers that men keep an eye out for!

Guys get all James Bond on a first date. Seriously, it’s like we’re secret agents doing covert operations (don’t worry though, it’s not in the creepy, sexual voyeur sense).

Our mission? To determine whether or not you’re second-date worthy. So while it seems like our only ambition is charming your pants off with witty banter, we’re actually in the midst of an investigation. Here, what we watch for.

1. You Aren’t Mute

A woman can sit across the dinner table looking hot as hell, but if the only time she opens her mouth is to insert her fork, we’re going to lose interest. A guy wants a charismatic girl who has something to say. “I went on a date with a nurse, and I was nervous because we had nothing in common, but there were no awkward silences,” says Paul, 27. “She told me all about working in the ER. She was so interesting that I asked her out for a second date before our first one ended.” Bottom line: You don’t have to pontificate on politics to be a good conversationalist. Just be open and enthusiastic.

2. You Ace The Bitch Test

Guys can spot a snot through 10 feet of solid concrete. How? All dudes have their own series of tests that are designed to size up your bitch potential. Luke, 28, describes one common method of bitch detection: “On a first date, I pay attention to the way the woman speaks to the waiter,” he says. “I’m looking for one word: please. Nine times out of ten, a woman who can’t even show a waiter that small courtesy winds up being nasty.”

3. You Say Thank You

At the end of the meal, most women still expect the man to foot the bill. And hey, that’s cool. We want to. But instead of feebly offering to go dutch or fake fishing in your purse for your wallet, just offer up a thank-you. “I went out with a woman who didn’t seem to appreciate anything,” says Rudy, 30. “I paid for the cab, the dinner, and the movie, and she said nothing. I wasn’t about to go for round two with a girl who expects to be spoiled.”

Tip: Show gratitude for the little things and he’ll be anxious to give you an opportunity to say thanks for something even bigger and better down the line.

4. You Make It Clear You Want A Second Date

“A friend set me up on a blind date, and I had a blast,” says Andre, 29. “I thought the girl did too, but when I dropped her off, she gave me a quick hug and ran inside. I assumed she wasn’t interested. Then a few weeks later, I heard from our mutual friend that she was bummed that I never followed up. If she had just given me some indication that she was interested, I definitely would have!” Moral of the story: Guys don’t pick up on subtle “Please ask me out again” hints. Instead, try being direct and say “I had a great time tonight” and give him a lingering good-night kiss. Or, here’s a novel idea: Ask him out.
