Are You Over Your Ex?

Whether you’re going through a breakup or have decided to move on from someone who can’t reciprocate your feelings, getting over someone is not easy. One of the reasons why it's so difficult is because you don't know how long it will take you to move on. There are some who can bounce back quickly after heartbreak, and a few (or a lot) who get stuck constantly thinking about what they've lost. Here are seven signs you still haven’t moved on:

1. You keep posting about the breakup on social media.

Yes, you’ve been hurt, but posting passive-aggressive status updates won’t help you move on at all. Instead of releasing all your pain and anger on social media, maybe you should unfollow or unfriend your ex to give yourself some time to think and heal. Or if you really want to write about it, maybe try exploring the positive side of the breakup.

2. You send drunk texts.

Aside from the typos you’ll be making, sending a message to your ex at 3 a.m. to see if he still cares about you is a bad idea. If he dumped you, it’s his loss! Keep your head held high, and remember, #NoRegrets.

Your best friends start to roll their eyes whenever you mention your ex’s name. Girl, wake up! How can you forget someone if you keep talking about them? Your friends are there to comfort you after the split, but if you keep on bringing up the past and won’t even listen to their advice, you might end up losing them, too.

4. You stalk him online.

We know you want to stay updated but you have to fight the urge to go to his profile. Seeing something (or someone) you weren't ready to see can bring you back to square one when it comes to moving on.

5. You’re still willing to do anything for him.

You know you two are over but you still do him “little favors” like picking up his little sister from school, paying his bills, or answering his texts and calls when he needs someone to talk to. You can’t seem to say no to him so he gets the best of both worlds. Well, that needs to end. On Psychology Today, motivational speaker and author Susan J Elliott JD, M.Ed shares that after a breakup, "there needs to be time apart to break the bond of 'the couple.' Each partner needs to separate and go back to being an individual without being a part of a duo."

6. You have strong emotions for him.

Every time you think of him, the past and everything that has happened between you two, you get sentimental. The thought of him gives you a rush of emotions and it feels like it was only yesterday when you guys fell in love. Well, it wasn't. So the next time you catch yourself thinking of him, try controlling your emotions. It's going to be hard at first, but you just need a little practice (and time.)

7. You don’t seem interested in anyone else...

…even though there are a lot of attractive people around you. When you meet someone new, you can’t help but compare them to your ex—and when you realize that they can’t give you the same feeling you had with your former partner, you shut them down.

Remember, going through a breakup is not the end of the world—you’re probably just being set up for something better. Don't be afraid to open yourself up to new experiences. You can do it!
