Q: “My boyfriend is a control freak, but I love him. Sometimes I feel sakal, but I don't want to break up with him. What should I do?”
A: You have to be really clear about what you want in your relationship. It can’t always be about him and his needs. You have to stand up for yourself, too. If you feel like he’s too controlling, talk to him about it, but do so in a calm manner—no shouting, screaming, or crying. Find a way to make him understand that it’s YOUR life, and he shouldn’t dictate how you should live it. Let him know that you appreciate his concern, but at the end of the day, it’s your choice. If he tries to control everything you do—how you dress, who you hang out with, your daily schedule—then that’s not okay. Don’t let him walk all over you and hold you back like that.
If he really loves you, he should try to lighten up and be more understanding. If he refuses to change for the better, it might be time to walk away, because you deserve to be with someone who will love you for who you are. Sometimes loving someone isn’t enough. You have to communicate and learn how to compromise.
