Hey girl, QQ: Have you ever looked down at your own vagina? I mean, really took a peek? If so, you’ve probably noticed the shape and curve of that lovely vagine of yours. And hey, I’m willing to bet your vagina style is totally unlike anyone else’s. So, congrats! You too have one of the many different vaginas in the world—and that, undoubtedly, makes you, you.
To be straight with you though, the vagina isn’t even what you think it is. Anatomically, the vagina is the elastic, muscular canal inside of you that essentially connects your uterus to the "outside world," if you will. In other words, you can't even actually see your vagina.
So when you’re noticing what you think your vagina "looks like," you’re really viewing your vulva and labia, says Felice Gersh, MD, founder and director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine.
And just like people have different looking noses, shoe sizes, and even ears, females have different looking vulvas and labias (the "lips" known as the labia minora and labia majora), too. “Women should not be fixated on an unreasonable ‘ideal look’ for these, as the important thing is feeling the sensations of these wonderful parts,” says Dr. Gersh.
The most common lewk is for the labia minora to project beyond the labia majora, says Dr. Gersh. So something like this:
But truthfully, your lady bits can come in so many different shapes and sizes, because the vulva varies from person-to-person. So break out that mirror, spread 'em wide, and get to know yours better.
HERE’S A LIST OF THE COMMON KIND OF VULVA LOOKS:
- Prominent Labia Minora
As in, your inner lip may stick out a little more than your outer lip.
- Long Labia Minora
Your inner lip may seem longer compared to your outer one.
- Short Labia Minora
Your inner lip may be shorter in length than your outer one.
- Full Labia Majora
Your outer lip could be a bit plumper and wider.
- Lean Labia Majora
Your outer lip could be lean and barely seen beyond your inner lip.
I know this all sounds like a bunch of gibberish, but that's because there's no wrong or right way your vulva should look. I mean, literally, no two vulvas are the same.
The takeaway? What you see on the outside is your vulva, not your vagina. And in terms of looks, normal doesn’t exist. So rock what you got regardless of how it varies from your friend's... or anyone else's for that matter. If you legitimately have any concern yours may have an abnormality, hit up your local gyno for an evaluation.
