This Is How You Properly Break Up With Someone

Text message breakups? Not cool.

No matter how you look at it, breakups can be messy and lead to a lot of pain and heartache. Although there's no easy and painless way to end it off with someone, you could still do it as gentle (or humanely) as possible. Here are tips to keep in mind when you feel it's time to break things off:

Be decisive. 

Before splitting up with your significant other, make sure both of you have decided to really break up. The cycle of calling it quits after a fight and getting back together a few days after can be tiresome and exhausting. Save yourself the heartbreak, and think things through before dropping everything.

Do it in person.

Never, ever break up with someone over text! While it may be the easiest way out, it is simply disrespectful. If you're in a long-distance relationship, you could at least give the person a call, so you won't leave the person in the dark.  The method is part of the message itself, ladies.

Of course, it's still highly recommended that you do it in person. This way, questions may be raised, and answers may be given.

Slowly cut off any kind of communication.

…and stick to it. It’s impossible for two people to suddenly change the routine that they’re used to. Instead of abruptly shutting him off, which can lead to drunken "missing you" calls and texts, start by lessening the time you two see and contact each other until you get used to it. It's going to be hard to move on if you keep talking to him every waking minute. Remember, you two are not friends—you're ex-lovers. You'll only confuse your feelings when the setup is just like before.

Be prepared for the breakup stages.

Expect to go through a whirlwind of emotions the moment you and your beau decide to part ways–from denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, to acceptance. It’ll be difficult, so just prepare yourself mentally and psychologically.

Easier said than done, right? But moving on and allowing yourself to heal will do you a lot of good. Stop thinking of the "what if’s" and "what could have beens." Focus on living your life apart from each other. Go out with your friends, and hang out with your loved ones! This is the best time for you to get to know yourself better. 

Trust the process, embrace the pain, prepare for changes—you'll be amazed at how the breakup has helped you grow as a person.
