If there's one scene in Fifty Shades Darker that we're super excited to see come to life on the big screen, it's the charity masquerade ball thrown by Christian Grey's family. Described by author E.L. James as "lavish" and "sensuous," the party features elaborate decorations, exciting entertainment, and some stunning Venetian costumes.
At one point, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) tells Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), "Everybody’s looking at us." His reply? "Not us. You." Smooth. And while Christian was probably alluding to the fact that Ana was with her, thus the stares, we personally think it was also because of what she was wearing.
The culprit? A liquid-like silvery-gray gown by Filipina designer Monique Lhuillier. The cowl-neck slip dress features so prominently in the movie—one of the characters even namedrops Monique and compliments Ana for her choice of outfit. "Ana radiates confidence and femininity, and so the gown I imagined for this iconic scene encapsulates that modern sophistication," Monique said in a press release.
Shay Cunliffe, the movie's costume designer, adds, "We sent Monique ideas and images that evoke old Hollywood, and she and her team took the inspiration from there—crafting this stunning confection... Monique also beautifully resolved our need to create a gown which can effortlessly slip to the ground… another feat of engineering."
Ana pairs the gown with a feathery capelet, also by Lhuillier. Shay explains, "Ana's cape itself was a challenge—each feather was sewn by hand—but I felt it would magnify Ana’s show-stopping entrance at the ball, hearkening back to the 1930s screen sirens."
Let's not forget the Samantha Peach Lace Goddess mask Ana conceals her features with, making her appearance even more mysterious. In the mood for some masked action in the bedroom? Buy it for yourself on Amazon for $15.99.
Word is, Ana's ball ensemble might just be the most memorable one in Darker. We won't spoil it for you (unless you read the book, of course)—but we will say that there's more to that outfit than meets the eye. ;)
