I think we can all agree that Wonder Woman is one badass character—and that the movie, along with Gal Gadot's portrayal, is what we need right now. Of course, in reimagining the story for a new audience, some changes had to be made with the Amazonian princess-turned-superhero's look. Long gone are the dangerously low corset and impractical (and possibly strangling) star-spangled cape—Wonder Woman's 2017 costume is, according to its maker, "modern and realistic."
In an interview with The Telegraph, costume designer Lindy Hemming shared a few details about the superhero outfit Gal Gadot wears in the movie.
1. Wonder Woman's new costume is all about practicality.
Hemming explained, "I didn't want them to look like they were overwhelmed by their outfit and couldn't actually do anything. She's really strong and tough and she needs to look like she could go for it. Also she needs to be comfortable, as she's a warrior and has to run through mud and snow."
2. Wonder Woman's armor has high-fashion roots.
In the movie, Diana wears armor that protects her in battle. This is actually molded from leather and handcrafted by Patrick Whitaker and Keir Malem of Whitaker Malen. The superhero is in good company—the duo previously worked with Alexander McQueen on his first Givenchy couture show, as well as with fashion designers Hussein Chalayan and Giles Deacon. ICYDK, Deacon recently designed Pippa Middleton's wedding gown!
3. Hemming had to create multiple versions of Wonder Woman's costume.
"Gal needed to have a lot of versions of each piece of her clothing too, so that it's ok to rip or muddy things when we do all the stunts and special effects," the costume designer said.
