Australians have a reputation for being chill and laidback, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that they’re developing a new fabric that gets clean on its own. Yup, you read that right. Your clothes could go from dirty to clean without all the manual labor that comes with laundry.
Scientists at Melbourne’s RMIT University have devised a way for stains to disappear from clothing—just from getting exposed to the sun. How does it work? According to The Wall Street Journal, tiny flecks of silver and copper were added to cotton fabric. Upon exposure to sunlight, these metal particles will combust and release energy that then takes out any organic matter on the fabric.
Don’t get too excited though. This new development is still on the testing stage, and would still have to undergo various tests before it is deemed safe to be used on a commercial level. So don’t throw out that washing machine just yet.
