Remember when we reported about the amputee model who walked the runway at New York Fashion Week? Now, in another fashion breakthrough, transgender model Andreja Pejic is on the cover of Marie Claire Spain, her first for a major glossy since transitioning into a woman in 2014. Accompanying Pejic’s photograph is the headline “Romper El Tabú” or “Breaking the Taboo,” Cosmopolitan reports.
Pejic broke into the modeling industry as an androgynous male model, landing covetable spots in fashion shows for Marc Jacobs and Jean-Paul Gaultier. In 2015, after a successful sex change the previous year, Andreja made her first runway appearance as a woman for British brand Giles. She also became the face of Kenneth Cole and Make Up For Ever, the first transgender model to do so for a major clothing label and a makeup brand, respectively.
We hope to see more breakthroughs like this in an industry that promotes diversity yet largely still adheres to the same beauty standards it wishes to break away from.
