Barbie Hsu Was Honored With A Statue By Her Husband And 'Meteor Garden' Co-Stars On Her First Death Anniversary

A year after her passing, Taiwanese singer and actress Barbie Hsu was remembered with the unveiling of a memorial statue at her final resting place in New Taipei City.

The memorial was revealed on Monday, February 2, marking the first death anniversary of the beloved star. The ceremony took place at Chin Pao San, a private cemetery in Taiwan, and was led by Barbie's mother and her South Korean husband, DJ Koo Jun-yup. Members of Barbie's family, including her younger sister Dee Hsu, were also present.

The memorial installation, called Eternal Orbit of Hsi-Yuan, features a monochromatic white sculpture of a girl standing with her hands clasped near her chest. It was designed by Koo himself.

During the unveiling, Koo delivered a short speech explaining the meaning behind the statue. According to the English translation of artistic director Li Cheng Dao's Facebook post, Koo shared that Barbie, whose Chinese name is Hsi-Yuan, often referred to herself as "an alien from outer space," inspiring the celestial theme of the piece. The nine cubes represent the nine planets, including the sun, with the number nine considered Barbie's lucky number.

"The direction [Barbie] is facing is approximately 208 degrees south," DJ Koo explained. "This points toward Taipei, allowing her to always look toward her family and me. The number 208 also represents our wedding anniversary on February 8."

Several figures from the Asian entertainment industry attended the unveiling to pay their respects. Among them were Rainie Yang and F4 members Jerry Yan and Vic Chou, who starred alongside Barbie in Meteor Garden.

Barbie passed away on February 2, 2025, at the age of 48. She died from pneumonia after contracting influenza while traveling in Japan during the Lunar New Year holiday.
