Carlo Aquino Says He's Done Explaining Himself To People Who Don't Know Him

Carlo Aquino has spent decades in the public eye, and with that comes the constant attention most celebrities can't escape. From his early days as a child star to his rise as a leading man, he's realized that some parts of your life are meant to stay private, no matter how public your life is.

This philosophy was particularly tested after his highly publicized falling out with former reel-and-real-life partner Angelica Panganiban in 2019. After their 2018 film Exes Baggage and the daytime teleserye Playhouse, fans were convinced a reunion was just around the corner, but it never happened. In the months that followed, Angelica publicly confirmed they were no longer on speaking terms.

"'Nung time na 'yun, parang lahat ng mata nasa amin. Hindi ko alam kung paano i-handle. I wanted to walk away," Carlo shared in his cover story with Esquire Philippines. "I don't feel the need to explain myself. Ang nagpapahaba lang at nagpapalaki ay 'yung mga taong hindi naman ako kilala, hindi ako kilala personally. At hindi ako mahal. Kasi kung mahal mo ang isang tao, hindi ka magsasalita ng kahit ano."

For Carlo, these words aren't just a reaction to gossip—it's a conscious practice of reframing negativity and protecting his own peace. Responding to people who don't know him personally only fuels more drama, while explaining himself to those who genuinely care builds connection.

He describes it as stepping back when things aren't healthy anymore: "Hindi na ako apektado kasi marunong akong mag-reframe nga, lumalayo ako nang konti kapag feeling ko masyado nang toxic. Kailangan ko muna hanapin 'yung balance ko bago ako mag-react." By choosing carefully when and to whom he gives explanations, he keeps his energy on what actually matters: his craft, his family, and the people who truly know him.

The same approach guides how he navigates his relationship with his wife, Charlie Dizon, where honesty and accountability are non-negotiables. "Maghahanap ka ng partner mo na kaya mong maging transparent. Na hindi mo kailangang i-filter 'yung kailangan mong sabihin o kailangan mong gawin kasi magiging kasama mo siya habang buhay," he says.

In other words, he's learned to reserve explanations for the people who are genuinely part of his life while letting go of the rest.

Carlo will star alongside Bela Padilla in Special Memory, the Philippine adaptation of the 2004 South Korean film A Moment to Remember. The movie is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2026.
