We Love to See It: Our Pop Princess Pinsan Olivia Rodrigo Shows Off Her Lumpia-Making Skills

Lumpia is practically universal among Filipinos—and yes, that includes Olivia Rodrigo. ICYDK, Olivia recently showed off her Filipino cooking skills by making lumpia. She also hinted that she might be cooking up something else too—like a new album.

On the series Now Serving with British Vogue, Olivia prepared lumpia the Filipino way, using carrots, onion, cilantro, eggs, and ground chicken. She did it all on her own and even shared that she struggled a bit while chopping the ingredients. Still, the dish holds a special place in her life, as she revealed she grew up eating lumpia made by her grandmother every Thanksgiving.

"To someone who's never had lumpia before, they're really delicious and savory and kind of greasy in the best way… It's just like feel good food," Olivia described. 

"My grandma used to make them for Thanksgiving every year and so that was probably my first introduction to lumpia. I'm making the roll ones and she would always make the triangle ones," she added. 

But what really caught the attention of Filipino Livies was that Olivia seemed to be cooking up more than just lumpia. While preparing the ingredients, the singer casually mentioned an upcoming album which she described as "very varied."

"I really wanted to figure out a way to kind of write about joy in this album. I feel like my last two albums are very rightfully so kind of angsty and heartbroken," Olivia expressed. "I was experiencing a lot of joy in my life, I wanted to figure out how to inject that into the songs that I was making. So yeah I'm really proud of it and I hope everyone likes it," she added.

As she continued preparing the lumpia, Olivia also began opening up about the ideas behind her new music.

"I feel like I create the best when I'm alone. There's a weird feeling like everyone feels it like when you're like writing something or making art or whatever you do that's creative. There's a weird flow state that you get in when you're really creative or you're having a good idea," Olivia went on describing her creative thoughts on how the album came to life.

"I think being alone is a really important part of the creative process and I love being alone. I'm a Pisces and very emotional so it works for me," she added.

Olivia also shared how even the simplest, most "boring" moments, like washing dishes or watching a movie, can spark a flood of song ideas. This time around, though, she revealed that many of those ideas center on writing about love.

"My favorite love songs are love songs that are a little bit sad or have a little bit of wistfulness or mourning or fear or something," Olivia said. "So I set out making this album like trying to write a sad love song and I hope that I did it at least in a few," she added.

As much as Olivia is excited, Filipino fans are just as eager. A comeback is already cooking and fans can’t wait to hear what she serves next.
