The Biggest News In K-Pop 2025

TWICE Takes Over Lollapalooza And The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

The nine-member girl group TWICE made history as the first all-female K-pop act to headline Lollapalooza in Chicago, delivering a high-energy set of 21 songs that spanned their decade-long career. Backed by a live band and a dazzling drone light show, the group had fans—from longtime ONCEs to curious festival-goers—dancing nonstop to hits like "The Feels," "ICON," and "I CAN'T STOP ME."

They also made their Victoria's Secret debut in October. Nayeon, Momo, Jihyo, and Tzuyu took the Pink runway by storm, performing "Strategy" and "This Is For" in lingerie looks that had everyone talking. Tzuyu's burgundy lace push-up bra, quickly dubbed the "Tzuyu bra," sold out within days, while fans applauded the girls for powering through a live performance—even with Tzuyu battling a sore throat.

BTS Confirms 2026 Comeback Album And World Tour

2025 was the year ARMY got their hearts back in full force. After all seven members completed their mandatory military service, Jin's RunSeokjin EP Tour Encore turned a solo show into a mini BTS reunion. J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook appeared across the two nights to perform iconic hits like "IDOL," "Spring Day," and "So What." Jin even teased a cinematic version of the tour, dubbing it "the best Christmas gift" for ARMY.

And just when fans thought their hearts couldn't take any more, BTS officially confirmed a brand-new full-group album dropping in Spring 2026, plus an extensive world tour with at least 30 concerts across North America and beyond.

Last July, RM reassured fans during the joint Weverse broadcast that the group was fully focused on preparing the upcoming album and tour, promising an experience fans could truly look forward to. Then in early November, Jimin added the cherry on top, letting fans know the recording was already finished—which means the countdown to BTS' next era is officially on.

"APT." Scores Grammy Nominations

Take a shot every time "APT." hits a milestone, because BLACKPINK's Rosé and Bruno Mars are making the world's playlists buzz nonstop. Inspired by a Korean drinking game, the track became the fastest K-pop video to hit 2 billion YouTube views, surpassing PSY's "Gangnam Style." It debuted at #1 on the Billboard Global 200, topped Apple Music's Global Chart, and racked up millions of Spotify streams. Fans even turned it into a TikTok trend that clocked over 5 billion views, proving that the song's party-ready vibe is truly contagious.

It seems the Recording Academy took notice, too. "APT." snagged three Grammy nominations for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, putting Rosé neck-and-neck with chart-toppers like Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, and Kendrick Lamar. Not bad for a cheeky drinking game!

Lisa Drops Her Solo Album And Makes Her Acting Debut

"What's my name? What's my name?"—BLACKPINK's Lisa made sure the world remembers it. The Thai superstar dropped her first full-length solo album, Alter Ego, showcasing multiple sides of her artistry. The 15-track release featured high-profile collaborations with some of the hottest names in music: "Born Again" with Doja Cat and Raye, "New Woman" with Rosalía, "Rapunzel" with Megan Thee Stallion, "FXCK UP THE WORLD" with Future, and "When I'm With You" with Tyla. Solo versions of "Rapunzel" and "FXCK UP THE WORLD" also proved Lisa could command the stage and studio entirely on her own.

Music wasn't the only stage she conquered. Lisa made her acting debut in the Emmy Award-winning series The White Lotus Season 3 as Mook—a flirtier, lady-like alter ego of herself navigating the luxury resort world with charm and wit. She even helped her co-star Tayme Thapthimthong nail the Thai dialogue, showcasing her commitment to her craft. On top of that, Netflix announced her first feature film role alongside Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) and Lee Jin-uk in Tygo, part of the Extraction universe.

K-Pop lit up this year's Coachella in a big way, starting with Lisa's five-act Alter Ego spectacle at the Sahara Stage, where she showed off just how cinematic and multidimensional her solo era has become. Jennie followed on the festival's final day with a confident, crowd-commanding set that brought together her vocals, rap, dance, and even a surprise Kali Uchis moment—plus a little Rosé-in-the-crowd support that fans adored.

ENHYPEN and XG made their Coachella debut together—ENHYPEN representing the new wave of fourth-gen boy groups from South Korea, and XG bringing their Japan-based global flair—creating a standout moment for next-gen acts on one of the world's biggest festival stages.

Looking ahead to 2026, Coachella is pulling out all the stops with BIGBANG, Taemin, EDM queen Youna, and KATSEYE (bonus!) joining the lineup. BIGBANG's comeback is arguably one of the most talked-about moments in K-pop history, with G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung finally hitting the stage again after a long hiatus. NewJeans vs. ADOR

So what's been going on with NewJeans? What started as a contract conflict between the members and ADOR snowballed into a full-on rebrand, a legal showdown, and a fandom-wide emotional roller coaster. The girls tried to move forward as NJZ, even performing new music and reassuring fans that they just wanted to get back to doing what they love. Meanwhile, ADOR pushed back hard, taking the issue to court and insisting the original contracts were still very much in effect.

The situation hit a turning point mid-year when the Seoul court sided with ADOR, ruling that the group's contracts remain valid and limiting the members' ability to promote independently. By the end of the year, Haerin, Hyein, and Hanni announced they'd resume activities with ADOR. As of writing, the agency has confirmed that Danielle has terminated her exclusive contract, while Minji is still in talks with ADOR regarding her future in the group.

"Golden" Becomes A Worldwide Phenomenon

An animated girl group taking over global charts wasn't on anyone's bingo card, yet HUNTR/X's "Golden" turned the whole industry on its head. Thanks to the wild success of KPop Demon Hunters—Netflix's most-watched film ever—the track practically became the pop anthem of the world. One minute you're watching a fun animated movie; the next, you're adding the virtual trio Rumi, Mira, and Zoey to your stan list like it’s the most normal thing ever.

"Golden" bagged a Golden Globe nomination, making history with EJAE (Rumi) as the first Korean American nominee for Best Original Song. And because this saga refused to stay chill, the track also scored Grammy nods, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks, went platinum, and flexed The Black Label's signature hit-making touch. Netflix even dragged the movie into theaters for sing-along screenings months after release and people showed up. Twice.

By the time HUNTR/X performed on The Tonight Show, inspired Halloween costumes, and soundtracked the Buckingham Palace's Changing of the Guard ceremony (yes, royalty marched to "Golden"), it was obvious the phenomenon had gone way beyond screens.

Idols Celebrate Coming Out

Just B's Bain made headlines when he came out as gay during a concert in Los Angeles, becoming one of the few active Korean idols to publicly share his sexuality. He followed the announcement with a heartfelt performance of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," waving a rainbow flag to celebrate pride and solidarity.

Recently, XG's Cocona embraced their identity as AFAB transmasculine and non-binary, sharing the news on their 20th birthday after undergoing top surgery earlier in the year. Their Instagram post highlighted the support of their group members, producer, and family—and even Bain, along with KATSEYE's Sophia and Megan, chimed in with words of encouragement—showing that acceptance and understanding can make a huge difference for artists navigating their identities in a high-pressure industry.

It looks like 2025 was a year K-pop fully lived up to its reputation for surprises, experiences, and jaw-dropping moments we couldn't stop talking about. From iconic stages to bold moves, it gave fans found even more reasons to stan.
