Suga Finally Revealed The Real (!) Meaning Behind His Stage Name—And Even The BTS Members Didn't Know

Just when ARMYs thought they had all BTS trivia on lock, Suga just dropped another one so good, even his bandmates were caught off guard.

In a recent WIRED "Autocomplete Interview," where celebs answer the Internet's top search queries about themselves, Suga finally put to rest one of the most persistent questions in K-pop history: what does his stage name really mean?

Reading the prompt aloud, he smiled and said, "I can finally explain this now. It's not [shooting guard]. It was annoying to explain, so I just said that."

For years, fans assumed the rapper-producer's alias came from the basketball position "shooting guard," which actually made sense. Suga is a known hoop enthusiast and was even named an NBA ambassador in 2023. But as it turns out, the real story is way more surprising.

Suga explained that his name actually has its roots in boxing, not basketball. "There's a legendary boxer named Sugar Ray Leonard, and I didn't come up with it. Mr. Bang [Si-hyuk] suggested it because he liked boxing so much," he said. "So people who have technical striking skills, the specialists, are called 'Suga.'"

Because Suga is famously precise with his rap, the name fits perfectly. He also gave a shoutout to UFC star Sean O'Malley, who uses the same nickname, noting that "Suga" is a badge of technical mastery in the fighting world.

The revelation left his fellow BTS members stunned. J-Hope confessed, "This is my first time hearing this." Even V and Jungkook joked that Suga probably just made up the boxing story recently, proving just how little some of the biggest BTS trivia had been circulating among the members themselves.

Suga emphasized, "[The boxing story] was too annoying to explain, so I just said 'shooting guard' from basketball."
