IU And Byeon Woo Seok Talk About Their 'Perfect Crown' Chemistry—And Why The Director Says It's "Worthy" Of 'Princess Hours'

Perfect Crown is gearing up to be everyone's all-time fave K-drama in 2026.

The show is one of the most-anticipated Korean dramas streaming on Disney+ in the first half of 2026. Top-billed by IU (When Life Gives You Tangerines) and Byeon Woo Seok (Lovely Runner), Perfect Crown is a fictional, modern monarchy K-drama set in the 21st century.

IU plays chaebol heiress Sung Hee Joo. She's wealthy, but unable to attain royal status in the drama. During a press conference on April 6, 2026, IU spoke about her character, saying, "Frustration is a keyword that really describes Sung Hee Joo. She's very greedy; she has a lot of yearning for things. But she's also very adorable. I thought Hee Joo was such a fascinating character."

Hee Joo's life then collides with that of Grand Prince Lee Ahn (Byeon Woo Seok), as the two enter a marriage meant to elevate each other's status in society.

At first glance, you might wonder what the Grand Prince stands to gain, given his royal status. However, Lee Ahn is still bound by the limitations of his position. He can't possess anything outside of his title.

"He has a status where he can't outshine anyone […]Lee Ahn is very strong on the outside, but he's very lonely and scarred on the inside. That's my focus in portraying this character," Woo Seok shared during the press conference.

IU and Byeon Woo Seok are also joined by Noh Sanghyun (Pachinko), Gong Seungyeon (My Lovely Journey), Lee Subin (Crash Landing On You), and Lee Yeon (D.P 2).

Before anything else—we know, everyone probably knows by now—but we have to point out that this marks IU and Woo Seok's second time working together after 10 years! The two briefly shared the screen in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, where Woo Seok played IU's cheating boyfriend.

So it's no surprise that in some of their promotional activities, IU and Woo Seok joked about how his Perfect Crown character, Lee Ahn, seems to be making up for that whole cheating storyline from a decade ago. LOL!

But even though it's been over a decade since their last project together, the two shared that they fell back into sync easily on set, creating an undeniable chemistry. "IU is so great to act with. She makes you feel at ease instantly," Woo Seok said, praising his co-star.

The cast also shared more about how Perfect Crown blends traditional and modern Korea—a key element that sets the drama apart. "I wanted the audience to feel like it's just like today, but with a royal family," Director Park Joonhwa said.

Woo Seok proudly shared that the drama highlights what's uniquely Korean for a global audience. He also revealed that he worked closely with the styling team to show how Lee Ahn's modern personality comes through, while still reflecting his role as the royal family's Grand Prince. "I wanted to show that my style shows how serious he is about his beliefs [as the Grand Prince]," Woo Seok told the press.

On the other hand, IU explores a more freeing approach to her modern character, Sung Hee Joo. "Heejoo is not really the very royal kind. She's more of a loose cannonball type of character," she detailed, adding that it was very fun to play the role throughout.

Gong Seungyeon pointed out how they found a balance for her character, the queen dowager Yi Rang. Her character was meant to be the symbol of the palace in Perfect Crown.

Even with her mostly wearing a hanbok in the series, she knew it wasn't enough to strike a balance between the two worlds of traditional and modern. And so, Seungyeon knew she had to also put effort into her speaking voice. "I also talk as if I'm acting in a period piece. I had to strike the right balance in it—I had to have dignity in my speech," the actress shared.

During the press conference, Perfect Crown was also compared to the hit and timeless K-drama Princess Hours. Both dramas were produced by the same production channel, MBC, and share a similar premise of a modern monarchy—though Princess Hours was released 20 years earlier, in 2006.

Director Park Joonhwa also weighed in on how their drama compares to Princess Hours, saying, "We poured everything into it. I think the biggest strength that we can boast is our cast. I loved every minute of filming with them. In each episode, your hearts will flutter for different reasons. This is going to be a series that is worthy of being compared to Princess Hours."

An interesting fact about this drama is that its story was written and submitted for MBC's scriptwriting contest in 2022. South Korean media outlets reported that the script actually bested 997 scripts, and it was written by a female writer named Yoo Ah In.

It was reported that writer Yoo's story caught the judges' attention by successfully detailing progressive and passionate characters. Moreover, it has a clear storyline and direction as to how a constitutional monarchy must work, even in an alternate South Korean setting.

Perfect Crown is set to premiere on April 10, 2026 on Disney+.
