Weddings are all about love, union, and of course, cake. At Carla Abellana and Dr. Reginald Santos' Tagaytay wedding on December 27, 2025, one highlight that got people talking was their minimalist rectangular wedding cake.

While some tried to poke fun at its unconventional shape online, even jokingly comparing it to a coffin, Carla kept it classy, replying, "Masarap naman at fully edible. Pati guests nag enjoy. Para sa amin maganda siya at yun ang importante."

What made the cake so talked-about isn't just its delicious flavor—it's a sheet cake, also called a slab cake, and it's been trending in the U.S. since 2023. Major platforms like The New York Times and Brides have featured this style, with the latter highlighting it in late 2024 as the biggest wedding reception trend to watch for 2025.

What exactly is a sheet cake?

Unlike traditional multi-tiered confections, sheet cakes are flat, usually rectangular, and can be single or layered. The name comes from the sheet pan they're baked in. It might sound simple, but that simplicity is exactly what makes them so appealing. Sheet cakes are practical without compromising on style, and they're no longer just for casual celebrations. Today, modern couples are bringing them to the center of the reception, proving that sometimes, less really is more.

Why are sheet cakes so popular?

For starters, they're super practical. Sheet cakes are easier to transport and less likely to get damaged compared to towering tiered cakes. They're also easier to slice—simply follow the grid, and everyone gets a perfectly even piece. Catering teams love them, and guests get to enjoy their dessert without the wait.

They're budget-friendly, too. A sheet cake can feed a large guest list without the extra labor or cost of tall, tiered creations. Their flat surface also doubles as a creative canvas—bakers can decorate them with flowers, fresh fruit, intricate piping, or playful color palettes, allowing each cake to feel personalized and eye-catching.

Flavor options are also more flexible with sheet cakes. Couples can combine chocolate, fruit, lemon, or other flavors in a single slab so no one has to miss out. And because they're versatile, couples can make them match any wedding vibe, from minimalistic and modern to romantic and lush.

Carla and Dr. Reginald's cake creation is a perfect example. Made by Cake Studio, the minimalist dessert looked elegant on the reception table while delivering on taste. Layers of chiffon cake, whipped cream cheese, mixed-berry compote, and fresh berries turned the rectangular slab into a delicious centerpiece that left guests raving.

So while the cake drew some jokes online, the truth is it's totally on-trend and a favorite in the wedding scene that might just be here to stay.
