Japan Visa Fees Could Increase In 2026—Here's What It Means For Filipino Tourists

Currently, Filipino tourists can apply for a single-entry visa to Japan for free, paying only a P520 processing fee. For long-term or multiple-entry visas, the fee is worth P1,150. However, Japan is reportedly considering raising visa fees next fiscal year, which could push costs up to ¥15,000 (around P5,625) for a single-entry visa and ¥30,000 (around P11,250) for multiple entries.

ICYDK, this will be the first time Japan raises visa fees in 48 years (the last one was in 1978!). The Philippine News Agency reported in November that the increase will likely affect foreign nationals applying to change or renew their residence status. Although the prices are not yet final, reports say the increase is part of the Japanese government's plan to address overtourism and align visa fees with those of Western countries like the United States and European countries. 

According to The Asahi Shimbun, Japanese foreign ministry officials noted that the low fee visa had been taken advantage of multiple times and has led to false or incomplete visa applications. They hope the higher fee will "discourage frivolous filings."

Aside from visa fees, the Japanese government is also planning to raise other tourism-related charges, such as the departure tax. From the current JPY 1,000 per person (around P370), the fee may rise to JPY 3,000 (around P1,100), with higher amounts for business and first-class travelers.

On the other hand, plans are underway to reduce the fee for issuing passports for Japanese nationals by JPY 7,000 for 10-year validity, as announced by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
