I have a confession: I own an embarrassing amount of lip products. (Two lip liners, four glossy tints, and two bullet lipsticks...all residing in the bottom of my bag right! now! 😳) And yet, every time I leave the house, I still do the same thing—layer a liner, a lipstick, and a gloss until I land on that one combo that feels just right.

Lip combos are no longer just a MUA trick or a red carpet staple—they're officially a part of the beauty girlies' everyday routines. Part routine and part ritual, lip combos are having a major moment online rn. Not just because they look good (they do), but because they offer something no single tube ever could: control. Control over tone, depth, finish, and most importantly—the vibes. 🙂‍↕️

Whether you're building the perfect nude or trying to recreate that TikTok-famous glossy lip, a good lip combo can take your look from put-together to effortlessly polished in about 30 seconds flat. Ahead, we explain why this trend is everywhere right now, the anatomy of a good lip combo, and a few local product pairings worth adding to your routine.

Why are lip combos so popular right now?

The beauty world is all about personalization, and lip combos feel like the perfect response to that. Instead of relying on a single color to suit your skin tone, you can mix and match to find your version of nude, red, coral...the list goes on! It's also an easy way to experiment with new looks—from '90s-inspired brown lips to ultra-glossy baby girl pinks—without having to slap on a full beat.

The anatomy of a good lip combo

A good, well-balanced lip combo usually consists of the following:

  • Lip liner: This adds definition to your lip shape and can make it fuller, depending on how you draw. You can choose one that's close to your pout's natural hue, or get one that's a little bit darker if you want to experiment.
  • Lip tint or lipstick: This provides the main pigment to your lips. It can be matte, satin, creamy, or sheer—it all depends on your personal preference.
  • Lip gloss: This is the cherry on top of your lip combo. It adds shine, comfort, or a subtle shimmer. While some skip this step for a matte finish, a swipe of gloss often brings the whole look together.

  • The secret lies in balance—combining depth with brightness, matte with shine, or warm tones with neutrals. And once you find a trio (or even a duo!) that works for you, it'll be your signature look. 😉
